At Oak Ridge National Lab (ORNL), two scientific neutron scattering user facilities are operational, the High-Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). Additionally, a Second Target Station for the SNS is currently in the development stage. To best utilize the neutrons produced at ORNL and deliver the most powerful scattering instruments, detector technologies have to be developed that push the cutting edge of spatial resolution, neutron efficiency, and maximum count rate. SiPM Anger cameras are scintillator based detectors developed at ORNL primarily for single crystal diffraction instruments. The design, operation, and performance of these detectors will be discussed, as well as the development of the next generation of cameras which include new scintillator materials and geometries, larger active areas, and unique form-factors that allow for ground breaking neutron scattering research.
